Making Home A Cosy Sanctuary: If I had my way, I’d live in a happy world where the people I love are around me all the time, no-one ever gets sick, there is no angst or regret and I could just enjoy the process of creation that nourishes me whenever I write a new blog post. But life isn’t like that, is it?
Have you ever had that experience where you feel like you are finally getting somewhere with whatever has been vexing you and you can see a clear path ahead, then something happens that is outside of your control and it knocks you down, taking all of your time and energy to get yourself back up off the mat?
2015 hasn’t started off that brilliantly for me I have to admit and it pains me to even say it. I prefer to focus on the positive and not dwell on the negative, but to deny the existence of negative would be to deny the life that I’m living, and my blog is all about celebrating life – however that life is turning out in the present moment. I don’t want to go into too much detail, to protect the privacy of my family members but we’ve attended a funeral recently and had an unrelated dash to the A&E department. There have been some other events too that all add up to a lot of strain, and a feeling that I really need a hug.
When we are faced with challenges that we don’t choose, it can be an opportunity to develop resilience and to prove to ourselves that we are stronger than we think. So it is important to make the effort to create a sanctuary at home, the one place where you can really relax and be. I did just this to help me take care of myself in a difficult time and you could too.
My experience of late has been with emotional pain – not physical, so I can only share what has worked for me, but I find that if you are flat emotionally, then nurturing your senses is a good way to start. Have a look at this beautiful soft furry throw and cushion that I’ve been using on my sofa and in bed.
The Zorina faux fur throw is by Kylie Minogue at Home and is beautifully soft and cushy – perfect for wrapping around yourself when cosying up for the night. It provides warmth and feels luxurious against your skin. The cushion is from the same range and is like a grown up teddy bear! It’s nice to cuddle when you just need a hug – it’s like having a self hug! Both items are from Wayfair and come in several colours. They are much desired by the children of the house but I’ve been selfish on this occasion and insisted that these pieces are just for me. The last thing I want is Coco Pops sticking to them or cat hairs getting into the fabric!
The next sense I’m indulging is smell. Have you ever been taken back in time by the scent of a perfume or felt comforted by the smell of a home cooked meal? This beautiful lavender bag from local artist Catherine Green has helped me to create a soothing space at home with the scent of Yorkshire lavender. Based just a few miles from me in Gomersal, Catherine uses bursts of colour in her work with lovely textures and designs to produce her unique gifts and homewares.
By now with my sensual soft throw and surrounded by a soothing aroma, I’m feeling pretty calm. It’s time to quiet the mind, by using one of the very pretty notebooks from Mum’s Office to download my thoughts and help process emotions. This silver book is a lined A5 paperback with a gorgeous ‘mock croc’ cover and is the perfect place to make sense of things then make future plans. I love a blank page to fill with dreams and ideas – a reporters notepad doesn’t do the process justice.
When you have spent some dedicated time on yourself and are ready to reach out into the world again, what better way could there be than writing an old fashioned note to a friend. This unique greeting card set from artist Catherine Green provides the means – you provide the content and a stamp and your friend gets the smile that comes from knowing that someone, somewhere is thinking about you, and don’t we all need that from time to time?
My weekends are often busy but occasionally, I get the treat of some unscheduled time to potter about. These days I’d rather surround myself with home comforts than go out shopping which I used to do – so all the products I’ve mentioned in this post are available over the internet for home delivery! Now all you need is the remote control, a mug of tea and a few quiet hours to yourself…
