My Kids & Their Messaging With the Intel Pocket Avatars App -The Intel Pocket Avatars App is a fun way to send animated messages, you simply choose your preferred avatar, and record what you want to say! The camera on your smartphone or tablet will record you delivering your message and the face recognition tool and the voice capture feature records your message so that your chosen avatar mimics your facial expressions whilst saying your words!

Last weekend we went to London for a mini break, which involved a 4 hour car journey with my kids. Luckily, they had just received tablets for Christmas so we visited the Google Play store to see what apps they could get. They each downloaded a messaging app from Intel, the Pocket Avatars App (#GetPocketAvatars) to help them ‘chat funner’!!

My children loved seeing the cartoon become ‘them’, here is their Dad choosing an avatar in a restaurant we visited!

My daughter has an iPhone so she went to the iTunes store to download the avatar for that device as well. Here she is being a blowfish with the app!

“Let me take a selfie!”

In our downtime between the London sightseeing, the kids tried out the different avatars and recorded messages with each. There are loads of free avatars in the Avaverse (their name for the Universe!) and you can get paid avatars too, but there are so many free ones, you don’t really need to spend money on them. Once we’d been given the hotel’s wifi code, my daughter secured herself about 50 free avatars!

Once we were home, I decided to become ‘Mother Earth’ and record a message for the kids to play when we arrived home from school. Click on this link to watch my message! I promise that I’m not that high pitched in real life… It was all the app!

Since our weekend break, the kids have enjoyed playing with the app and sending each other messages. It is nice to see them playing together with technology as so much that is done on a smartphone or tablet is done alone. They have quickly worked out that the animal avatars are more fun than the humans, and they’ve even tried scaring our cats with the doggy avatar!

In this video, my daughter shows you how to choose an avatar and create a message and afterwards, my son plays a video to my daughter that we recorded earlier!

Here is a screenshot of how the app looks in record mode.

My kids have really enjoyed creating messages to show each other and they have emailed me a few too! I have to confess, I’ve recorded a couple myself – a request to tidy their room from a cartoon dolphin is a lot more fun than ‘Mum nagging!’ It’s helped us all to ‘chat funner’!

Have you ever tried this fun app? Why not leave me a comment as an avatar and put the link in the post below! Let’s ‘blog funner’ too!!

  • I think it is cool and know the boys would, but at 10 and 9 they do not have a mobile phone and I am not keen on them getting one. They could use it where there is ifi with their ipod though
