Review: Cheval Knightsbridge

Written by

Luxury, comfort, convenience and privacy was exactly what I experienced last weekend when I stayed at the Cheval Residences serviced apartments in Knightsbridge, London. I was in the city for a writing course and needed a place to stay that wasn’t too far from the action (I didn’t want long tube journeys at the start and end of my days), yet had all the conveniences of home – and this is what I got! Serviced apartments are not just for business travellers anymore. Families and couples looking for a home away from home are getting in on the act, experiencing the luxury and attention that these apartments offer along with the convenience, space and freedom of a private apartment.

The warm and welcoming reception team at Cheval Knightsbridge couldn’t do enough for me when I turned up to check in. Even though I was a couple of hours earlier than the check in time, they made a few calls and got me into my apartment very quickly. I was hoping just to store my suitcase whilst I browsed round the shops, so I was delighted when they could accommodate me early!

I was shown around by Salvatore, one of the concierges on duty from the 24 hour concierge team, who told me all about the Cheval Residences brand. There are 8 Cheval Residences in London, you can see the locations at their website, but in Knightsbridge alone where I was staying, there are 45 different properties.

After checking in at reception, I was taken to my apartment. This was actually in a different location – just a few minutes walk from reception but the concierge are on hand 24 hours a day and just a phonecall away if I needed anything. I was given the code for the free wifi which was essential for me as I wanted to do a little work when I arrived, and also shown the Resident’s Handbook which outlined the nearest supermarkets, restaurants, essential information about the apartment and other useful information. I did want to visit a nearby supermarket to pick up a few bits – the apartment comes with a Nespresso coffee machine and the pods but I do enjoy a cup of tea so I wanted to get teabags! However it’s worth noting that the housekeeping team email you before you arrive to ask if there is anything they can prepare for you – such as groceries on arrival. I did ask for some fruit and some Pepsi Max which they arranged for me and was placed into my apartment on my day of arrival, plus they also furnished me with some complimentary groceries such as a pint of milk and a bottle of wine!

Cheval Knightsbridge Reception

I always like to check out the bedrooms first and there were two beautiful ensuite rooms within this apartment.  The master bedroom pictured below was toward the back of the building and well insulated so there was no noise from the busy and bustling Brompton Road, and the curtains are blackout curtains, so the room is designed to create the best environment for sleep.  There was plenty of wardrobe hanging space and there is a hairdryer and safe available.  You also get the use of robes and slippers throughout your stay, making it really homely!

The kitchen was brilliant – not a mini kitchen like you might expect, but a full sized family kitchen with all the appliances I’d need.  There was even a washing machine and dishwasher which is great if you are having a longer stay but I didn’t need them as mine was a flying visit!  Everything I could think of was included from pans to a corkscrew!  I didn’t use the pans but I did put the corkscrew to good use!  Plus I did use the microwave to heat up my M&S dinners which I’d purchased earlier that day, but there was also an oven for use.  As a solo traveller on this occasion, it was easier to get a ready meal rather than dine out alone and I didn’t want a takeaway so I was really happy in my apartment for the weekend!

The living space was comfortable and had Sky TV and music systems.  For longer stays you can purchase extra Sky channels if you wish – you really can customise the stay to your personal preferences, including having extra linen and towels if needed, and no request is too big or too small – just call the concierge!

However beautiful the apartment is inside, check out this view outside! My apartment overlooked Harrods and I was blown away by this fabulous location.

My apartment on the Brompton Road overlooked this London landmark and was a short walk from Green Park where I could take a morning run if I was so inclined. The Reception team gave me a map of a good run, but I hadn’t brought my trainers or I would have! If you do like your exercise however, residents of Cheval Knightsbridge can have free membership to the Aquilla Health Club on nearby Thurloe Place for the duration of their stay. There are gym machines there plus a sauna, steamroom and even a small swimming pool!

The price for my apartment would have been around £450 per night, but as there are two double bedrooms in the apartment, if you were sharing with another couple this would translate to a rate of £225 per couple – so much better! Plus as it is a serviced apartment you get space! A typical hotel room in central London would cost me around the same price but there are no dining facilities – I really dislike having to eat room service on my bed. With a serviced apartment you get the benefits of a hotel because of the assistance and facilities, plus about 30% more living space, the privacy of an apartment and the freedom this brings. As a family, a serviced apartment would actually give us a better all-round experience but work out cheaper now that my kids are older and we need to hire two bedrooms in a hotel, or an adjoining bedroom / family suite which costs as much as two rooms.

On the Cheval website you can book online and book early to get a 10-15% discount on the price, and each apartment has its own rate depending on features, the time of year and location. Whether you are staying for one night, one week or one year – do visit their website to see how you can have an impressive and convenient place to stay in the heart of London.

I would highly recommend Cheval Residences and they will be on my list for my next stay in the capital!

  • Wow that view is so amazing! That looks like amazing accommodation, I have considered serviced appartments before due to the fact that there are quite a few of us and it is always tricky to get hotel rooms for 5. I would certainly consider these apartments, the size and facilities are perfect and the price isn’t bad considering the location.

    • Absolutely – the location was really impressive and I was blown away that I could see Harrods from my window! It’s definitely one to consider for your next getaway to the city!

  • Wow, it sounds amazing! You get the best of both worlds with the service of a hotel, but the freedom of self-catering (I’m a big fan of self-catering). As a family of five, forever forced to book two hotel rooms, I will look into serviced apartments in future.

    • I’m glad I have given you another option! This would indeed be a very good idea for larger families, and it really is the best of both worlds.

    • Isn’t it? It really would be ideal for families as there is just so much more space than with a hotel.

  • I need to look into staying in an apartment when we visit London as we struggle to find hotel rooms big enough for all of us. What an amazing location too

    • Absolutely – it really is a home away from home with the benefit of being slap bang in the middle of the action!

  • That looks fabulous and it’s not a bad rate split between two is it?

    • Makes it totally reasonable!
