Review: Titanic Day Spa Can just one day reverse a build up of stress that has been accumulating for weeks? I certainly hoped so as I pulled up at the Titanic Spa in Huddersfield at 9.00am last Wednesday.

My mum and I were there that day. Me, a busy mum of two, business owner and chief home-maker who is also currently project managing some home renovations, and my mum – grandma of three and full time carer to her disabled husband. In the weeks leading up to this visit, I’d been juggling quite a lot extra than normal – including two business trips to London. Travelling always takes it out of me, and I’d not had the chance to get any weekend lie ins to balance it as I was working last weekend, delivering a social media workshop to small business owners! We were both (if I’m completely honest) absolutely knackered and hoping for a miracle. I’m pleased to say that’s exactly what we got at Titanic – as we left at 3.00pm feeling as though we were floating on a cloud!

Titanic Spa Entrance

Titanic is a multi award winning spa in Huddersfield, West Yorkshire that is housed in a renovated textile mill. It boasts a swimming pool, hot tub, gym, mud chamber, a multitude of treatment rooms and heat and ice rooms! The Heat & Ice Experience comprises of a herbal infusion room, aromatherapy room, saunarium, crystal steam bath, sauna cabin, foot baths, ice room, plunge pool and multi sensory showers to help cool the body!

We attended the day spa which runs from 8.30am to 6.00pm daily but they also have apartments to rent for overnight guests. I mentally filed this fact away for the next time one of my friends says they need a break – then I can suggest a girls weekend! (It would also be perfect for hen do’s!) You can arrive at any time between 8.30 and 9.30am and we got there at 9.00am, one of the first that day to be shown around.

After checking in at reception where we were given a robe and slippers for the day, we were taken around the facilities and afterwards went to the changing room. We were provided with a locker fob and the lockers were roomy enough to hang up our day clothes and accommodate a gym bag, then we started our day with a welcome drink!

In the restaurant, you can help yourself to tea, coffee, water or fresh orange. You cannot take the drink into the pool area though, but it is OK outside so we got a cup of tea and headed to the outdoor hot tub… In the rain! It was after we were sat in the hot water with our drink of tea that I noticed the sign that read ‘no drinks in the hot tub’ so I downed it in one and settled in for a good chat with mum! With our busy lives, much of the time I spend with mum, other than on holidays, is about ‘doing’ not ‘being’. We are either off to Slimming World together or going shopping to get something specific, or she is coming to my house so I can print her something off. It’s all activity so it was nice to let the rain splash on our faces as we chatted about the goings on in our lives without having to navigate a busy supermarket or highway! After a few hot tub cycles we were ready to do something else so we headed inside for the swimming pool.

For most of the morning we went between doing lengths in the pool, to the sauna, steam room and aromatherapy room, then onto the foot baths and I briefly went in the ice room. We floated from area to area, deciding what took our fancy as we went, and the place gradually got busier and busier – it is certainly a popular day spa for groups of women but there were also a few couples there too. It didn’t feel crowded though, and it was nice to see other people enjoying the facilities. If you want a more active spa day you can also use the gym, but mum and I were more interested in the relaxing part, a gentle swim and lounge about in the heat rooms.

The package we were on is called The Titanic Heat & Ice Experience Spa Day and is available Monday to Sunday for £75 per person. This price also includes a one course light lunch in the Bistro (excluding drinks). Our lunch was booked for 1pm then we each had a facial appointment booked for 2pm (this is an added extra) so we decided we’d leave after that at 3pm as we had done everything by then but you are able to use the facilities until 6pm.

Before lunch we went into the relaxation room to settle on a bean bag with a magazine. It was very chilled out and mum almost fell asleep! At about 12.50pm we were both hungry so we headed to the Bistro for lunch, and thankfully they let us in early! Our table was reserved and waiting and we were given a menu. There were some hot and cold options, but as it was a rainy cold day outside, we both wanted warming up! We both chose the Yorkshire asparagus, leek and Caerphilly tart and ordered two sides of Ciabatta and buttered new potatoes. The sides were £2.50 each and our other extras were a Cappuccino each after lunch. You are allowed to wear your robe in the Bistro but as we were planning to leave after the facial and didn’t want to sit around in wet swimwear, we had showered and changed into our day clothes.

lunch

Lunch was delicious!

The only negative point of our spa day experience came after lunch when we headed back to the relaxation room to read a magazine and rest for 40 minutes or so until the facial. It was extremely busy in the room and every sofa, chair and beanbag was taken. The only other areas to sit in were the poolside (but we’d changed out of our swimwear) and the Bistro (which we’d just left). We could take a chair in Reception, but we were in relax mode and wanted to lie down rather than sit, just like the other guests in the relaxation room. So we headed for the bar area which we had been shown at the start of the day. After laying on a day bed there for 5 minutes, a staff member came by and informed us that this area wasn’t open until 4.00pm and we should rest in the relaxation room. Ah! But it was full! I do think that if the spa knows that certain periods are busier than others (for example, around the lunch period when everyone is either waiting to use the Bistro or after when they have eaten), they could make other rooms like the bar available to guests because in reality, who wants to sit upright in a Reception chair when they are relaxed and awaiting the next part of their spa experience? Reception areas are for comings and goings and the ‘outside world’, not the relaxed, calm environment that spas work so hard to create for their guests, and being forced to sit in such an area would surely undo the laid back demeanor that has been achieved so far?

After a quick chat to the Duty Manager we were allowed back into the bar which is a really beautiful area. I enjoyed taking a few photos whilst we awaited our facials.

At 2.00pm beauty therapist Zoanne collected me for my Comfort Zone Expert Facial which would take 55 minutes and is priced at £65.00. She was an expert with her mix of feathery touch and firmer massage as she applied and removed the various creams and lotions that form the facial. The treatment was a complete facial along with a head massage and even neck, shoulder and arm rub which was very calming. I didn’t quite fall asleep during the treatment but it did completely relax me and my skin glowed afterwards.

Mum and I both enjoyed our spa day experience and she texted me later that day to say how relaxed she was!

Titanic Spa is the UK’s first eco-spa and is located at Low Westwood Lane, Huddersfield, HD7 5UN. The spa can be contacted on tel: 01484 843 544 or www.titanicspa.com

  • It sounds like you spent a wonderful day together – but what a shame that there aren’t enough places to sit and relax. I’ve experienced this situation at other spas and it does affect how you feel about the experience over all.
