Michelle Cookson is the the creator of Edenfound blog and has just started an online party/event hire business, Eden Celebration. She has two girls aged 5 and 6 (but she’s almost 7, she’ll have you know!) Here’s what Michelle had to say!
Q: How would you describe your style?
A: I find that a really difficult question to answer because I don’t like to wear the same look for long and I like to experiment. One day I might channel Audrey Hepburn, the next day Debbie Harry, it all depends on how I feel that day. I think the best description would be the same one I give use when describing my personality – unpredictable and loud!
Q: Have you always dressed this way?
A: As soon as I left for university I began to experiment with clothes and fashion and I definitely wore a few ‘out there’ pieces (blue and white horizontally striped trousers and a white flared trouser suit to name but a few!) I wouldn’t be seen dead in anything I wore back then, but although my tastes have changed, my ethos hasn’t. I still don’t shy away from colours or patterns and I feel more confident in my own skin now than I did then.
Q: How important do you think it is to have style when you’re a mum?
A: I don’t know whether it’s important to follow fashion, but I think most people have their own individual style and I think it’s important to maintain that identity when you have children.
Q: What are your fashion essentials?
A: I live in denim because it’s hard wearing and forgiving and I have it in every fit imaginable – skinny, boyfriend, flared, dungaree-style, the list goes on…. I like to team my jeans up with a brightly coloured shoe or accessory and then I’m out the door.
*One tip that I can share is to invest in a great coat in a longer length. You can hide all manner of fashion disasters under one of those and nobody need ever know…
Q: Do you think you ‘lose yourself’ when you have kids and if so, how do you stop that happening?
A: It’s easy to lose your identity when you’re a mother, especially in the early years. It’s happened to most mums that I know. Inevitably when your focus is wrapped up in someone else’s needs 24/7 you lose a bit of who you are. Also, your body shape changes. For example, I needed a larger dress size after both my pregnancies, which rendered half my wardrobe completely unwearable for a very long time.
My advice would be, don’t panic, and don’t compare yourself to celebrity mums. Remember, they have people on their payroll to make them look good. Since having kids I buy less items, but spend a little more on individual pieces. I want things that are going to look good for a long time, that I don’t have to worry will give me a wardrobe malfunction!
Q: What are you wearing today? Where is it from?
A: I’m wearing a hat from H&M, shoes from New Look a fur gilet that I made myself, flared jeans that are so old I can’t remember where they’re from and a black polo. The bag is from Accessorize.
