Festivals are all about the ‘Fs’… Fun, freedom and frolics in a field! But the most exciting Camp Bestival F word is FOOD!
Camp Bestival is my favourite family friendly festival and 2014 was our third time at Lulworth Castle where thousands of families from up and down the country gather together to party! As seasoned festival goers, we have sussed it out – enjoy some kiddie friendly activities during the day then when the sun goes down it is raving on the castle field at night!
The musical acts this year took me back to my late teens and early twenties, as indie band James who my husband and I started off our courtship enjoying together, kicked off as the Friday night headline act then we had De La Soul on Saturday and Basement Jaxx rounding things up on Sunday just before the annual fireworks display that close the show.
But what I love most about Camp Bestival is not the obvious, the big name acts, the bands that everyone has heard of. What I love is those acts that I just happen upon as I’m walking through the field. The Fabulous Lounge Swingers who caught my ears as I passed the Castle Stage on Saturday afternoon and who I’m still talking about more than a week later. I’ve even changed my ringtone to Lady Gaga’s ‘Telephone’ as I heard them singing it in their raucous, knees up manner but to be honest, I prefer their version! Please bring out an album, Fabulous Lounge Swingers… I’d buy it on iTunes!
Other enjoyable parts of the festival were Helen McGinn from the Knackered Mothers Wine Club speaking in the Guardian Literary Institute. This fellow blogger has successfully turned her hobby into a business, with TV appearances and a stall in Camp Bestival’s Feast Collective where she introduced some new wines to the knackered mothers (and dads) over the weekend! Here is my walk to see Helen speak, so you can see the brightness and vibrance of the festival…
In fact, the Feast Collective was a highlight of the festival and as I am such a food lover (can’t you tell? You should see the size of my backside!) I had to check out Zoe’s Ghana Kitchen Oh my! It didn’t disappoint! Hubby and I enjoyed the meat platter – as tasty as it was good looking… have a squizz at this!
Sunday saw us feasting at The Surplus Supper Club an initiative that saves good food from being sent to landfill. My family and I joined Tattooed Mummy and hers to enjoy a feast complete with ‘smuggled in’ White Zinfandel, Prosecco and some rather fine Billy Bear (My son won’t touch anything else!) It was an afternoon of some belly laughs, good food and us learning how to swear in Spanish!
I can’t even touch the surface in words, of what has made Camp Bestival the highlight of our summer for the past few years. All I can advise, is… be there. Go and experience for yourself. No number of YouTube videos, blog reviews or Tweets read will give you how it feels to be there. It is immersive, inclusive and a feast for the eyes, ears and tastebuds. You can’t get bored at Camp Bestival- if you aren’t rocking out to the music you are licking your fingers with the food and the people watching you can do here is first rate!
2014 Blog Ambassador: JuggleMum is an official Camp Bestival Blogger in 2014! I’m excited as I’ve loved Camp Bestival for years and now I get to report on it with official eyes! I got a swanky press wristband rather than a ‘General Admission’ one which enabled me to crash the sweaty press tent, and I swished around all weekend feeling very important but even a press pass couldn’t help me escape the sawdust festival loos!
